Respiration” Makes
Cellular Respiration” Possible

These 2 words “respiration” and “cellular respiration” mean two different things:
Respiration is “the act of breathing” by the lungs.
Cellular respiration is “the act of releasing energy” by cells’ mitochondria.
Although they mean different things, they do affect each other because Respiration makes Cellular respiration possible–See below.

From this comic, you can see that respiration helps ensure a steady supply of oxygen for the cellular respiration to use, and it even helps get rid of carbon dioxide afterwards!

This is why you have to keep breathing (engage in respiration) to survive because without oxygen in your body, cellular respiration would stop and cause your whole body to shut down due to lack of energy!  So, don’t hold your breath for too long, be sure to keep breathing!

Cellular Respiration

Cellular respiration is the process that supplies the cells (as well as a large organism like a human) with the energy necessary for survival.  We eat food and breathe air for the very purpose of gathering the necessary materials to keep cellular respiration going nonstop.  The process of cellular respiration is carried out by cells’ mitochondria.


They are the “ingredients” of a chemical reaction.  In a chemical reaction, reactants are used to produce “products”, which are the end results of a reaction.


Glucose is the simplest form of sugar and contains a lot of energy–think of the phrase “sugar-rush”.  Because it is “simple”, it can be easily absorbed into an organism’s body/cells to provide the organism with energy.


Nucleus is the most important organelle in a cell and it stores the genetic material.  You can find more information on the nucleus here.



This word is short for “deoxyribonucleic acid”, and it is the molecule that makes up organisms’ genetic materials.  Its slight variant “RNA” (ribonucleic acid) is sometimes used as genetic materials for more primitive/simple organisms.
